Among the many wondrous sights of Nainital, the prime one is that of the sprawling Naini Lake in the centre of the town. A leisurely boat-ride on the blue-green waters of the lake is a must for every tourist. The ropeway offering great vistas of the lake below and the great Himalaya beyond is another popular attraction. For those with an interest in the old, the Governor’s House and the High Court hold much charm. Tiffin Top is a great place for family picnics while the spiritually inclined can visit the Naina Devi Temple or the Gurudwara on the edge of the lake. The Boat Club is the place to go back in time –down a chhota peg at the bar here the way the Gora Sahibs did; teetotallers can instead choose from one of the many fine mocktails. For dining there are many a restaurants on the mall serving you a variety of Indian and European fare. The Capri and Machan are two of the more popular ones. But would you want to try out a restaurant outside after you have tasted the food at Balrampur House, well, that is another question. Besides, there are plenty many pretty places around Nainital. Sattal and Naukuchiatal are two other lakes which are less than an hour away. The quaint Naukuchiatal is the prettiest of the lakes in Nainital while the woods in Sattal make for a great picnic spot and is a great place for birding. The Jim Corbett National Park is only 128 kms away. Should you want to take a clearer look at the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, you may consider visiting Kausani which is about a 4 hours drive from Nainital.
